THE RESERVOIR

A BOLD, DRAMATIC KITCHEN FOR A SUNKEN HOME IN THE WYE VALLEY

THE PROJECT

Our clients embarked on an architecturally ambitious project to build their new home on a piece of family land in the Wye Valley, Herefordshire.

The property honours the existing landscape by converting a reservoir into a family home, resulting in a sunken building that nestles discreetly into the landscape.

The architecture and interior draw inspiration from the surroundings, referencing the wild English countryside and the reservoir’s pre-existing industrial features. The kitchen continues the narrative from the architecture by Loyn + Co. architects, infusing the kitchen and environment as one design story. Warm tones echo the rich warmth of sunsets enjoyed from the west-facing aspect and the rusting and weathered features of the old reservoir.

THE FINAL OUTCOME

dark black kitchen with statement black and gold granite black kitchen with industrial architecture

CHARACTERFUL QUARTZITE

Distinctive quartzite surfaces with rich black and gold veining accentuate the black timber kitchen. This eye-catching stone adds vibrance and fun to the design to reflect the couple’s personalities, with the fluid veining creating a sense of movement.

This magnificent quartzite ties the kitchen design to its surroundings, with warm tones referencing the rusted industrial components of the old reservoir. The dramatic veining creates a statement akin to marble, yet with the superior durability of quartzite.

DRAMATIC FEATURE STONE

The Black Tauros quartzite is book-matched on both the island and splashback, showcasing the beauty of the natural stone pattern and enhancing the design’s symmetry. The quartzite extends upward to frame and envelop the wall cabinets on the back wall, enhancing the design’s impact and elevating the sense of theatre.

HIDDEN UTILITY ROOM

The kitchen leads directly to a utility room featuring laundry appliances and additional storage. By concealing the utility within a secret door, the room disappears to retain the kitchen’s minimalist, symmetrical design.
