THE NATURAL CHEFS KITCHEN
A MODERN WOOD KITCHEN COMBINING URBAN DESIGN WITH NATURE
THE PROJECT
Having recently purchased their new home in a suburb of South West London, this couple embarked on a whole home refurbishment project including major internal works to reconfigure their home to suit their lifestyle and tastes.
Through collaboration between Extreme, the client and their trades, the decision was made to remove the structural column and nib walls to completely open up the kitchen space into one large, open-plan kitchen dining and living area.
“A bold modern interpretation of an English wood kitchen.”
THE INSPIRATION
Located in a leafy suburb of South West London, just a stone’s throw from Richmond Park, the couple enjoyed the combination of city and country life. Working in the city during the week, they escaped to their home which felt a world away from the busy city life to a natural refuge where they could rest, recharge and enjoy time as a family.
It was this combination of urban and nature that would be a key component of the design concept. As a keen cook he also desired a kitchen with the features of a chef’s kitchen – a highly practical and durable space with large preparation areas to cook Italian recipes and make pasta with the family. The kitchen would also capture the theatre of cooking, providing the perfect environment for hosting dinner parties and entertaining guests.
The kitchen would be completely handcrafted in England to the exact style of their choosing – a bold, modern interpretation of a bespoke wooden English kitchen.

THE FINAL OUTCOME
EXOTIC WOOD VENEER
Red gum wood veneer coats the drawers of this kitchen island, creating a more unusual aesthetic to that of a more traditional oak kitchen. The vibrant tones of the veneer bring a sense of warmth to the design, while the striking linear natural grain of the wood creates a dramatic impact.
COPPER HERB TROUGH
One of the central features of the kitchen island is the copper column with integrated herb trough. The herb trough is designed so that excess water from watering your herbs is drained away automatically. Also doubling as an ice bucket, the trough is perfectly suited for hosting dinner parties and entertaining guests. The copper column appears to rise up through the chunky worktops, creating a focal point to this kitchen island.
ANTIQUE BRONZE MIRROR
Bronze mirror in an aged, antique finish forms the backsplash behind the kitchen sink. Highly practical and easy to maintain, the mirror also reflects light and sends a warm glow around the room.
BESPOKE KITCHEN STORAGE
Handcrafted walnut wooden drawers with dovetail joints make these drawers just as beautiful on the inside as they are on the outside. Entirely custom made, these drawers are created to the exact depth and height required to store our clients crockery and cooking utensils.
SIDE MOUNTED HOB CONTROLS
The combination of Gaggenau gas and induction hobs gives total control and flexibility to the chef. The side-mounted hob controls sit perfectly with the chunky porcelain worktops and emulate the user experience of cooking with a range cooker.
