THE WALLED GARDEN HOUSE
A CONTEMPORARY KITCHEN GROUNDED IN HISTORY & NATURE
THE PROJECT
Set in Norfolk within the historic grounds of Lynford Hall’s walled gardens, this home is the unique outcome of heritage, architectural ambition and personal expression. Designed by the visionary owners of Clayland Architects, the home is a modern reinterpretation of the estate’s rich heritage. The historic walled garden was used to grow fresh produce for Lynford Hall manor, and Clayland Architects office now sits in the Glass House, where exotic fruits and vegetables once grew. This fascinating context became the foundation for a highly individual family home and kitchen design.

ARCHITECTURE THAT HONOURS HISTORY
Clayland Architects approached the home design with a sharp eye for detail and respect for the history of the building. The new, modern structure sits within the walled garden, abutting the original wall. This historic feature is celebrated in the centre of the home by leaving the original wall visible on the interior. The wall is the backdrop to the kitchen and living space, extending along the length of the space with glass roofs joining the two structures and bringing natural light into the space.
THE KITCHEN
The generous kitchen space would accommodate both day-to-day living and entertaining. With a hidden prep kitchen elsewhere, the main kitchen would be for daily cooking and serving food at dinner parties. The u-shaped kitchen island anchors the open-plan space and provides a central hub for food preparation and socialising while making the most of the views out to the spectacular landscaped gardens. The intersecting island is a functional statement centrepiece, featuring breakfast bar seating at one end and a custom floating corner at the other.

MODERN ARCHITECTURE MEETS NATURE
Nature and architecture intertwine throughout the building’s design, from the green living external wall and copper cladding to the intersecting stone columns enveloped by ivy. The kitchen design takes cues from its natural surroundings and architectural elements, resulting in a space that feels distinctive, purposeful, and seamlessly integrated into the building’s fabric.

A KITCHEN DEFINED BY TEXTURE & PLACE
The Extreme kitchen follows the tactile nature of the interior scheme, with intriguing, organic finishes that resonate with the home’s former life as a walled garden.
The tall cabinetry features a deep, undulated timber texture that echoes the garden’s forested landscape. Aged copper accents, drawn from the property’s exterior cladding, are thoughtfully incorporated into the kitchen surfaces and the island’s feature panel, seamlessly bridging the divide between indoor and outdoor environments.

INDIVIDUAL DESIGN THAT TELLS A STORY
At the heart of the kitchen, the island commands attention with its floating corner, drawing the eye to the room’s centrepiece. A textured liquid metal feature panel, mirrored plinth, and bold, chunky worktop are elevated further by integrated lighting, creating layers of depth and intrigue.
The result is a kitchen that feels both grounded in its historical setting and distinctly modern in its execution–a space that thoughtfully reflects the couple’s adventurous spirit and visionary approach to design.

EXPRESSIVE INTERIOR DESIGN
Drawing inspiration from the clients’ global travels and design ethos of ‘more is more,’ each element of their home was carefully curated to reflect their personal tastes and experiences. Layers of texture, pattern and a rich palette of colours elevate the modern design and clean lines. The bedrooms and reception rooms draw inspiration from a different country or city, bringing diversity into the interior, where each room tells a story.
