TEXTURAL TIMBER

A LAYERED TIMBER KITCHEN WITH CUSTOM DETAILING

THE PROJECT

Extreme Design was appointed by interior design studio, Sara Agar Interiors, to create a kitchen, prep kitchen and utility space for this discerning family home in Oxfordshire.

The custom timber kitchen is a showpiece; quietly luxurious, grounded and naturally opulent. Functionality was paramount, but never at the expense of aesthetic integrity. Our design draws on both architectural context and international influence, with a considered blend of artisan materiality and family-friendly function.

DISTINCTIVE MATERIALS

Materials plays a leading role in this timber kitchen, where every surface and finish has been carefully chosen to add depth, warmth and interest to the space.

A standout feature is the stunning Taj Mahal Quartzite, a soft, creamy natural stone with gentle veining, hand-selected by the client. It’s used throughout the kitchen, not just on the worktops, but also to clad the island legs and shape the window sill, giving a sense of crafted luxury and cohesion.

TAILORED HANDCRAFTED CABINETRY

One of the key design features of this kitchen is the mix of cabinetry detailing, which showcases multiple furniture finishes in one harmonious scheme. Rather than using a single cabinetry style throughout, the Extreme designers created a layered look by combining texture and detail. Slim-framed doors in dark stained timber bring a clean, refined feel to the tall cabinetry, while the island features reeded timber fronts that add a more tactile, architectural quality.

Glazed cabinets are elevated by reeded glass set on a bronze frame, adding a reflective dimension to the space. Finally, the scheme is completed by bronze piping around the tall cabinets and handmade antique brass pull handles.

DOUBLE ISLAND

The double island configuration elegantly supports an ergonomic cooking layout within the generous open plan space, while creating dedicated food preparation and social zones.

One kitchen island is designed for performance, equipped with a Gaggenau induction cooktop for food preparation and generous drawer storage. The second is more tailored to socialising and dining, with comfortable breakfast bar seating for five and glazed cabinetry for glassware and alcoholic beverages. Both islands are anchored by the same language of rich stone and reeded timber, creating unity even as the function shifts.

The Prep Kitchen

Tucked beyond a discreet sliding door, the prep kitchen is an extension of the main space, both visually and functionally. Here, finishes are thoughtfully adjusted to suit the demands of heavier use, yet remain tonally in dialogue with the principal kitchen.

Reeded glass and bronze accents continue through the space, ensuring a sense of continuity. The cabinetry and work surfaces echo the palette of the main kitchen, refined for robustness while maintaining an elegant finish. Appliances and storage are concealed with intention, allowing the space to operate as a professional-grade environment behind the scenes – ideal for entertaining, catering or everyday practicality.
