THE PERFECT STORM
A LUXURY KITCHEN DESIGN INSPIRED BY AN UNFORGETTABLE STORMY NIGHT
THE PROJECT
With the children now grown up and living away from the family home, this couple decided to extend and re-design their home to suit their current lifestyle. When the children lived at home the kitchen is the place in which the family would congregate to cook, eat, do school homework and generally enjoy spending time together. With the children no longer at home, the kitchen would now be the setting for romantic evenings and elegant dinner parties with friends. However, spending time together as a family would still be at the core of the design and the kitchen would also be perfectly suited to the treasured moments when the children would come to visit – although now this would usually involve stimulating conversation about life and current affairs over a glass of wine.
“A kitchen that reflects their story, forming the foundation for the next chapter in their lives.”
THE INSPIRATION
The extension gave the couple a blank canvas to create the space exactly as they desired. The design would be an expression of them as a couple; a place that reflects their story, celebrates their family and forms the foundation for the next chapter of their lives.
One of their most memorable and cherished moments took place during a family trip to Malaysia. As they sat enjoying dinner one evening at the Thirty8 restaurant overlooking the city, the skies opened and they witnessed one of the most dramatic storms they have ever seen. The moody clouds above the city skyline, interrupted by electric lightening cutting through the dark sky and momentarily illuminating the city below. Not wanting to venture outside, they stayed until the early hours of the morning drinking cocktails, talking, laughing, sharing stories and enjoying each other’s company.
It is the experience of this moment that forms the central concept for their kitchen design which is translated through subtle design details throughout the kitchen.

THE CONCEPT
THE FINAL OUTCOME
METAL DETAILS
Two columns coated in cracked bronze cut through the surface of the kitchen island, framing the bar area which comfortably seats four people. The darkness of the grey lacquer cabinetry is offset by the satin bronze plinth which is enhanced by integrated lighting – a beautiful feature which at night transforms the kitchen into a bar akin to those found in luxury hotels.
INTRICATE INLAYS
The doors are finished in a linear veneer stained in a deep grey. Each section of veneer is positioned in a different direction, creating a subtle patchwork effect. Inspired by the appearance of lightning, delicate brass inlays in a satin finish slice through the veneer doors.
UNUSUAL ANGLES
Angles and layers are present throughout the kitchen design, inspired by the city skyline. The layering of materials and structures gives the kitchen depth and intrigue, however the complementary tones of the materials ensure that the design details don’t shout at you – instead the design slowly unravels itself to you.
DISCREET APPLIANCES
The Gaggenau appliances are hidden throughout the kitchen, further enhancing the bar aesthetic. Behind the tall cabinetry you will find integrated refrigeration and ovens that are accessible by pocket doors. The hob is located on the island for a more social cooking experience, with downdraft extraction built into the worktop.
