A BROODING YET INVITING BESPOKE MODERN KITCHEN
THE PROJECT
Located in Surrey, this elegant new-build residence was created for a private client by Charybdis Developments, with interiors by Alexander James Interiors and a bespoke kitchen by Extreme. The brief was to create a space that balances refined luxury with everyday liveability, resulting in a modern and sophisticated environment that’s understated, timeless, and crafted with precision.
The resulting kitchen expresses a calm, modern sensibility. Dark, textured cabinetry contrasts beautifully with the light-filled architecture, creating a dynamic yet harmonious balance. The space feels refined and intentional, designed with precision and composure.
THE KITCHEN
The kitchen forms a natural centrepiece within the property’s open-plan living space, defined by clean architectural lines and beautifully executed detailing. Despite its darker palette, the design feels inviting and balanced, a testament to the interplay of texture, proportion and light.
Ceiling mouldings and layered lighting enhance the sense of height and softness, framing the statement island beneath a trio of sculptural pendant lights. These features establish a rhythm and warmth that connect the kitchen to the broader interior scheme.
BALANCED MATERIALITY
Though dark in tone, the kitchen feels luminous in the property’s context. Expansive glazing and pale flooring reflect natural light into the room, allowing for a moodier palette while maintaining a bright and uplifting feel.
Cabinetry in timber grain and ribbed textures brings tactility, complemented by smooth ceramic surfaces and subtle bronze accents. Lay-on doors are framed with slim, brushed bronze profiles, giving the kitchen a smart, tailored aesthetic. Continuing onto the handle rails, the brushed bronze finish brings an understated and contemporary luxury without feeling overly glamorous.
Statement natural stone in green and neutral tones sweeps across the island and continues onto the hob backsplash, its fluid veining bringing movement and interest. The stone’s richness is beautifully offset by minimalist cabinetry and the soft warmth of the bronze fittings, creating a dynamic yet harmonious composition.
FUNCTIONAL BEAUTY
Precision craftsmanship defines the layout. Every cabinet and work surface has been carefully considered as a balance of function and form. The island serves as a sculptural feature and a social hub, with integrated seating encouraging informal connection between cooking and dining zones.
The cabinetry conceals generous storage and integrated appliances, allowing the visual flow to remain uninterrupted. Clean lines, concealed lighting and carefully considered proportions give the room a sense of order and tranquillity, reflecting the essence of modern family life.
LIGHTING & ATMOSPHERE
Lighting is central to the design narrative. During the day, sunlight filters through the full-height doors, illuminating the dark surfaces with a natural radiance. By night, the atmosphere transforms. The pendant lighting casts a soft golden hue over the stone and bronze detailing, while integrated cabinet lighting reveals subtle layers of depth and warmth.
This interplay of tone and texture creates an environment that feels both intimate and architectural, perfect for relaxed family gatherings or elegant evening entertaining.
